A Better Way

We could have a conversation about if you should or should not get a flu-shot. I could tell you there are essentially two types of flu shots, the nasal inhalation virus (a living but weakened form of the virus), and the injection (a killed virus). When the vaccine enters your body, your body (so the theory goes) creates anti-bodies to the different types of viruses that were introduced in the vaccine. This (supposedly) gives you protection to those virus types.

While there are literally, thousands of strains of the influenza virus, a flu shot will only protect against 3 or 4 (depending on whether you receive a trivalent or quadrivalent vaccination). It’s also important to understand that the influenza virus is constantly mutating to create new strains.

I could also strongly suggest that you actually read the package insert before you decide about the flu shot and understand what all the ingredients and preservatives actually do to your body. I could tell you about the Cell Cultures, Stabilizers (sucrose, gelatin, or polysorbate 80), Adjuvants (aluminum salts are added to the vaccine in order to stimulate an immune response to the killed virus), Inactivating ingredients (Formaldehyde is added to the vaccine during the production process in order to prevent bacterial contamination) Preservatives (Thimerosal (mercury) is added to multi-dose vials of the flu shot) or Antibiotics (Penicillin or other sulfa drugs are added to the vaccines in order to prevent bacterial contamination).

But I won’t.

Instead, I will tell you of a better way. The “No Flu” Shot way. Simple. Inexpensive. Readily available. Actual protection from the “Flu Season, ” which is actually NOT a season. It is a time when you don’t get outside as much so you have decreased sun exposure. You usually have decreased water intake as well. Perhaps you eat too many cookies and sweets.

Stop eating CRAP (Carbonated, Refined, Artificial, Processed). Limit your exposure to aluminum, mercury, and other neurotoxins. Read the label (on everything, including body products). Focus on organic or non-GMO. Eliminate the “chemical” stuff all around you, like plastic.

Build good health. Eat Real Food. Eat an entire Rainbow Spectrum of food. Add Herbs and Healing Spices. Make Fresh Juice. Use Essential Oils. Drink Ginger Tea. Take Elderberry Syrup. Make Chicken Soup. Drink Bone Broth. Bundle up and go outside. Go for a drive and roll the windows down. Laugh. Love.

Build and strengthen your God-given immune system. Our bodies have a remarkable ability to heal. Help it.

Farmers Markets

What is the Farmers Market Lifestyle?

Fundamentally, it is a belief that a Community should be able to feed itself.

We, at The Farmory, LOVE  the seasonal opening of other Farmers Markets in the area. This is good news!

If you are a farmer, producer or a seller, it is the way you bring your goods or services to Market. Another Market is welcomed, as it is more opportunity for you to establish customers and sell your product so you can grow more food and keep being a farmer.  Being a local grower or producer means that the money earned is also spent within the community.

If you are a consumer, it is also good news. More choices about how to spend your dollars. We are a wonderful community that supports the local grower, maker or baker. Each Market has it’s own distinct “flavor” or “thing” or whatever. You will see many of the same vendors at various Markets, but one particular Market will be best suited to your schedule and life. Having more choices is good, because sometimes “life” happens and you can’t get to your favorite Market, but you still have to eat and you still want to SHOP LOCAL.  We encourage you to spend time at the other Markets in the area.  Each has it’s own special offerings.

You can trust me when I say, there is NO comparison to strawberries or greens that have been grown and freshly-harvested from healthy, organic, rich, worm-filled soil; to something picked and shipped from Mexico or SoCal last week.

Almost ALL of the food-borne illnesses you hear about in the news are from Big AgriBusiness, using industrial procedures to mass produce and preserve food.

Farmers Markets products are generally:  fresher, cheaper, seasonal, safer, better variety and taste, healthier for you and supportive of a local economy.

Having said all that, here are the other local Markets:

Wed: Tuolumne Park

Thur: Columbia

Fri: Twain Harte, Angels Camp

Sat: Sonora

Sun: Copperopolis Town Square

So, what makes us different? What is our “flavor” at The Farmory?

*Organic and GMO-free (mostly)  Although most of our producers are not “certified” organic, they all use natural practices to farm without the use of pesticides, herbicides or other toxic products or practices.  The Bakers and Makers all use organic ingredients in their products.  And if you are ever in doubt, just talk to them; they will be happy to share what is not organic and why they choose to use it.  You will find many heirloom varietals available in the Market.  Need to read about GMOs.  Read this. . . or not.

*Open year-round, Wed, noon to 6 and Sat, 10-4.  We mindfully set our hours to NOT conflict with other Markets.  We want to be Cooperative, not Competitive with the other Markets.  We want the Farmers, Bakers and Makers to have as much opportunity as possible to sell their products.  Many of our Merchants will be found in multiple markets.  We want you, as a shopper, to have as many choices as possible to support the local economy and we also want you to bring your friends and neighbors into this lifestyle.

*Indoors with Permanent Merchant Booths  Rain or shine, heat or cold; we are open.  Of course, if you have been into the building, you know we are not “climate-controlled” at all.  If is is hot (or cold) out, it is hot (or cold) in.  We are somewhat protected and insulated (12 inch concrete walls do offer quite a bit of protection) but we do not heat or cool the space very much.

Just as you shop at different Markets, you should also buy from different Farmers each week.  Why?  Food has whatever nutrients and minerals it collects from the soil it is grown in.  Food grown in different places will have subtle differences in nutrient content. Right now (spring) you should be eating LOTS and LOTS of greens.  Dark green leafy vegetables are, calorie for calorie, probably the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food. They are a rich source of minerals (including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium) and vitamins, including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also provide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which protect our cells from damage and our eyes from age-related problems, among many other effects. Dark green leaves even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats.  Perhaps the star of these nutrients is Vitamin K. A cup of most cooked greens provides at least nine times the minimum recommended intake of Vitamin K, and even a couple of cups of dark salad greens usually provide the minimum all on their own. Recent research has provided evidence that this vitamin may be even more important than we once thought (the current minimum may not be optimal), and many people do not get enough of it. EAT MORE GREENS!

*The Buying Club and Raw Milk  This is the BIG difference.  This was our starting place; as a well-established Buying Club that needed more space.  Combining with a Farmers Market just made sense.  You can get most of what you need in one place.  Fresh, local items, as well as non-seasonal, non-local grocery and produce items.

*The Community.  I think we have all worked at getting to know one another again. We can sit, linger, talk to neighbors. We are very diverse in our opinions about politics, religion, education, health issues, child-rearing; BUT we all can agree and come together on Real Food. We are a group that thinks “organic” is not just a Marketing Scam, but a lifestyle.  We don’t need to see a sticker on a piece of fruit to know it has been “certified,” because we have talked to the farmer and we know his practices. If you are a Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo, GAPS Eater, allergic, whatever, you can get what you need to nourish your family with Real Food.

Perhaps a bit of bias, but I do love The Farmory the best. 🙂

Humble Beginnings

Back when we were “just” a Buying Club……meeting once, every other week…..this was a pretty standard size order….

We now have grown into and filled our 10,000+ square foot building 🙂

Wonder what THIS year will bring?

Changes to Membership

LIfe-changing

Looking back over the last year, we stand in amazement at what we have built.  The very best part is the sense of Community.  Like-minded folks, gathering together, on a fairly regular basis, and getting to know one another.

We know we lost a few members when we moved to Columbia.  It is simply too far to drive each week.  We certainly understand that, but miss seeing you.  Please come back!

We have been looking at the “books” for the last year with a consultant and we will have to make a few changes.  We still intend to have the very best prices overall on organic items anywhere in town, except when the “big guys” run a loss-leader sale, or Grocery Outlet has some random organic items.

We understand a big membership fee, due once a year, is difficult for many of you, so we are going to change to a  $8 Monthly Membership Card. You can buy the Membership Card at anytime during the month, or skip the months that you won’t be placing an order.

Remember, you only need to be a Member to PRE-ORDER your items, or shop in the Members Only room.  You can still shop without being a member.

The BEST way to get you groceries is to pay the Membership Fee and actually pre-order your groceries.  The  pre-order margin will remain at 17% (or less) on all of the companies that we use.  Azure Standard is, by far, our largest supplier, and I  will be adding a  Split Fee to help pay the helpers.  This will probably be 4% of your order.

We understand this is not what we said we were going to do, but overall we think it is better if we actually can stay in business. The overhead is just higher that we anticipated in the new location. (Welcome to the business world, right?)

George and I appreciate your continued support.  Overall, it has been a wonderful year.  Sometimes the days are long, and the project list seems to have no end in sight, but we get to work together, as a family, almost every day!  Building any business is hard, but we are willing to continue, with you, in this adventure.

We are looking forward to the New Year with anticipation of what is to come!

To Your Health in the New Year.

George, Arleen, Zoe and Zane.

and as a reminder…. here is where we started, just 1 year ago.. 🙂

Louella’s Toffee

Jo

Candy……we know we shouldn’t eat it but we all want a sweet treat now and then. Good news is that Louella’s Toffee and Treats are all homemade and a lot healthier than the junk you get in the store. Everything is either organic or gluten free; a lot are both.  Jo Rodefer is the award winning candy maker at Louella’s.

So…if Jo is the candy maker, who is Louella? Louella was Jo’s mom who, at Christmas time, spent hours in the kitchen making lots of different candies; everyone’s favorite was what she called Almond Roca. Louella passed away December 2012. The following month California passed the Cottage Food Law and Jo decided to go for it. She started with her mom’s classic recipe, got creative and now has 12 different varieties of toffee. Then she did the same thing with marshmallows!

There is always something new and fun at her MPO booth.  Visit Louella’s Homemade Toffee and Treats to sample the classics as well as the crazy ones.  You can also find her at local Craft Fairs and Events.

Jo is a sweet addition to The Farmory!
